Wagga Wagga (or Wagga as the locals call it) straddles the Murrumbidgee river and is part of the Wiradjuri nation. For many years people thought the name Wagga Wagga meant: many crows. In 2019, the local council enacted its first Reconciliation Action Plan and heeded expert advice to revise the official meaning to: many dances and celebrations. Wagga has a population of approximately 70 000 people and is known as the City of Good Sports. Wagga Wagga Athletics and Little Athletics Club was the 17th club to form in NSW when Little Athletics was created making us one of the oldest clubs in NSW. There are now over 150 clubs across the state.
Here at the Wagga Wagga Club we focus on the LANSW values of Family Fun and Fitness and place importance on personal improvement and fostering a supportive social environment.
While our primary focus is not competitive success, we still have plenty of opportunities for competition for those who want it. We have club athletes competing at regional, state and national levels each year as well as athletes competing at gala carnivals around the Riverina and beyond on regular weekends throughout the season.
Bill took great pride in being part of the Jubilee Park facility’s development and offered countless hours of unpaid work to build and complete the complex. The track was consistently voted as one of the best grass tracks in NSW throughout its life. During 2024-2025 the facilities were closed to allow for a complete upgraded and athletes spent a season at temporary facilities dubbed: Wiradjuri Track and Field (off Narrung St).
In late February 2025 athletics clubs finally returned to Bill Jacob Athletics Centre now complete with new field facilities and a new synthetic track surface. The official grand opening will occur on 14 March 2025.
